Joe has been collecting Railwayana for nearly 40 years specialising in signalling related items. He spent 7 years as a Signalman with British Railways working traditional manual lever signal boxes before moving on to modern power boxes.

As a fully qualified engineer and a specialist in building and restoring all steam related railwayana and engines Joe is extremely passionate and always ensures top quality advice and restoration work on all our products.

VT2021. 3 GAUGES FROM BRITISH RAILWAYS 08 SHUNTER 08544.

This sale is for all three gauges as it would be nice to keep them together. Large Ammeter measures  8 1/4" diameter and two smaller gauges measure 5 1/4" square. 

VT1890. L.M.S. HAWKS EYE STATION SIGN "PREES"

This cast aluminum sign is in face restored condition with the back in original ex railway condition. The blind tapped hole have been drilled through at some stage probably to enable wall mounting. Thes have since been face filled. 

VT1917. G.W.R. BRAIMER OIL CAN.

In ex locomotive condition although the small pad on the oil plunger is missing , the plunger still operates.

VT 1776 - CAST IRON CALEDONIAN RAILWAY CARLISLE MILE MARKER

Caledonian railway cast iron mile marker, 157 miles.

This signa has had face restoration but otherwise in original condition.

Measures 30.5 x 26.5cm

VT2011. BR S ENAMEL TOTEM SIGN "WEST CROYDON"

This example is fully flanged and the face is in excellent un-restored condition with only the outer white border and black edge flange receiving restoration. The colour  is strong an not faded and the enamel has a great shine.

VT2000. STEVENS CAST IRON SIGNAL FINIAL

This Steven's finial was used by several companies, mainly Caledonian and North British Railway companies. This items is in restored condition.

VT2002. OLD INDUSTRIAL STEAM LOCOMOTIVE REGULATOR HANDLE.

We don`t know what type of locomotive this handle came from but we believe its and industrial and possible a narrow gauge locomotive. This item has been cleaned and primed ready for final restoration.

A nice forged steel regulator hanlde .

VT1905.. BR S ENAMEL TOTEM SIGN "PLUMSTEAD"

This half flanged  has received restoration to several face chips and the work has been carried out well. The totem has a lovely colour and nice shine.

This GWR brass lever plate is from under a signal box block bell.  It is ex Wallingford signal box

All the wax has been retained and the wording is clear to see.

Here we have a GWR SIGNAL DEPARTMENT  Gangers key release instrument.

These instruments enabled the ganger to take possession of the single line for maintenance.  This is an A pattern instrument

The coils are tested to 100 OHMS 

VT 1998 - GWR CAST IRON GANGERS KEY RELEASE INSTRUMENT "D" PATTERN

Here we have a GWR SIGNAL DEPARTMENT gangers key release instrument.

These instruments enabled the gangers to take possession of the single line for maintenance.

This is a "D" pattern

VT 1999 - GWR CAST IRON GANGERS KEY RELEASE INSTRUMENT "C" PATTERN

Here we have a GWR SIGNAL DEPARTMENT Gangers key release instrument.

Theseinstruments enable the gangers to take possesion of the single line for maintenance.

This is a "C" pattern, and has been extermally restored.

Coils test to 100 OHMS

VT 1835 - BR E ENAMEL TOTEM SIGN "THORNE SOUTH"

We only know of three of these totems, of which all had crease damage.  Two examples had crease damage on the lft side, whereas this one had damage on the right side.

The totem has been professionally straightened and repeired, and is very displayable.

The rapaid goes through the T in the word South.  The letter T being 80% repainted.

This totem has a stunning blue enamel, and displays very well.

 

VT 1995 - LEVER DESCRIPTION PLATES & BACKING PLATE DITTON NUMBER 1

Here is a selection of lever plates and a trafolite backing plate from Ditton Junction number 1 signal box.Closure of the signal box, along with Ditton Junction No2 signal box came on 10th December 2000 when signalling passed to a new Ditton signal box which was commissioned the following day

VT 0176 - SYKES BRASS CASED STOP SIGNAL REPEATER

This Distant signal repeater is a production by the GNRly Telegraph dept and is stamped in wood base "GNR TELE 679. This instrument has its original un-restored patina and is in full working order.

VT 1981 - GWR BR WR BACOLITE PLUNGER RELEASE

This device is simply a plunger switch which was used to release an electric loco on the corresponding signal or point lever. This item is in ex signal box condition and could be used as a door bell push!

VT1903. SINGLE LINE STAFF "CAVAN-CROSSDONEY JUNCTION"

This staff is of the triangular section with lovely cast raised name in good old brass. This item has a great patina in is in oirginal ex railway service condition. This staff measures 26" long.

VT1952. SINGLE LINE KEY "MACHYNLLETH-CEMMES ROAD"

This key has been repainted and cleaned making it very presentable. This is also a first generation example rather  than a later re-engraved key. This is a "C"  pattern key.

VT 1934 - UPPER QUADRANT SIGNAL LENS GREEN USED

The green light is usually produced through the use of a blue spectacle lens, which produces green when lit from behind by the yellowish flame from a paraffin lamp.

VTJW101. BR S ENAMEL TOTEM SIGN "HITHER GREEN"

Hither Green is a railway station located in Hither Green in the London Borough of Lewisham, south-east London. This example is fully flanged and has a great shine and bright colour. The right hand end has a well executed repair down the second "E". This location has a large locomotive depot and of course notable for the tragic accident of 1967.

A very nice totem which has not appeared in auction since 2016 !

VT1837. BR E ENAMEL TOTEM SIGN "DERBY ROAD"

A fine half flanged  example from this location. Derby Road railway station lies in Ipswich's district of Rose Hill just a mile east of the city centre along the Felixstowe Branch Line.a couple minor well executed repairs carried out in our workshops, the totem has a great shine and fantastic blue colour.

This item will be well packed and dispatched via DPD next day delivery and fully insured.

VT1893. L.M.S. STANNIER BLACK FIVE EX 45471 HOOTER WHISTLE.

An ex locomotive condition Stannier Hooter whistle from 45471. This locomotive entered  service in December 1938 and was sadly scrapped  in October 1965 when the whistle removed .  

A nice large whistle with is totally ex loco condition and evens smells of locomotive!

VT1543.GWR 1947 PATTERN BLOCK INDICATOR.

These 1947 pattern block indicators were the final design  of that year replacing the Spagnoletti blocks which were in service for well over 80 years and continued into the late 1960s in some boxes. This example is the earlier pattern with the rounded top corners. 

In great condition and is in full working and and all coils have been tested.

TOTEM CAP BADGE BR WESTERN REGION GD848.

Totem Cap Badge British Railways Western Region chocolate brown enamel with nickel type lettering. Both lugs and fixing pin intact on the rear of this used for purpose badge. Made by JR Gaunt of London.

British Railways North Eastern Region totem cap badge. Tangerine enamel with gilded type lettering. Made by JR Gaunt of London. Both lugs and fixing clips intact on the back of this used for purpose badge.

VT1X11. CAST IRON GWR SIGNALMANS LEVER COLLAR.

Commonly referred to as a lever collar this device was used as a reminder to the signalman and prevent the lever catch handle being operated. This would be used in example where a train was standing at the home signal and where no track circuit is provided. Also great as an egg cup!

VT 1862 - CAST IRON SIGNAL BOX DOOR NOTICE

A great item in face restored condition. This example is the much rarer type with "IS" before the Allowed in this box, about one in ever 20 has this earlier difference, a must if you have the other version!!

TOTEM CAP BADGE BR SOUTHERN REGION GUARD. GD794.

Totem cap badge British Railways Southern Region GUARD. Chrome lettering as worn by Goods Guards. Genuine original badge made by J R Gaunt of London as marked on the back. Both lugs and fixing pin intact on rear. Nice used for purpose condition.

GENUINE EARLY BR LEATHER GUARDS BAG/SATCHEL. GD839.

Genuine and original leather British Railways Guards utility bag/satchel early pattern. Softer leather divided internal compartments. Buckle straps provided inside for flag carrying. Shoulder and closing straps with buckles complete and intact. Very well made to service a long hard working environment. This bag is in used for purpose condition. A good leather waxing would bring this bag up a real treat. An ideal item of equipment for preserved railway personnel.

VT1574 GWR 1947 PATTERN DOUBLE LINE BLOCK INDICATOR.

Here we have the GWR standard pattern block instrument introduced in 1947, I've personally used these  instruments when I was a signalman on BR and they were a joy to use. This is an earlier dark case example.

This example is in ex signalbox condition  and has been been tested on an ohms meter and all coils read as on original test label.

VT1845. GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY L.N.E.R. PIECRUST HANDLAMP.

This hand lamp is a marriage of an earlier G.N.R top stamped G.N.R and dated 1907 and an L.N.E.R case. Lamps were often repaired like this if damaged . The lamp top revolves easily and fit correct. The front slide out burner is stamped LNER . 

Great condition.

VT1838. BR S ENAMEL TOTEM SIGN"NEWINGTON"

Some touching up of the white outer border and 2 chips one the green, one to the left of Newington and a small area on top but very displayable.

VT 1808 - LNER 2573 LOCOMOTIVE FRAMED PICTURE

This beautiful image is of the 2573 Harvester locomotive, published by The Railway Magazine.

 

The image includes all the details of the loco.

It Measures 52 x 30 cm roughly

2 FOOT GAUGE "DINOWIC" PETROL MECHANICAL LISTER TYPE LOCOMOTIVE

This locomotive was designed by Dan Nemeth of Joe Nemeth Engineering Ltd over a number of years. Its a robust design using a 1939 vintage re-conditioned Lister G2 petrol engine with mechanicial cone clutch transmitting its chain cdrive to both axles via a Hudson Hunslet 2 speed reversing gearbox. Being of a new construnction every this is in tip top condition with no worn out parts! Its travelled to several 2 foot line in Britian including Statfold Barn railway and Amberley chalk pits museum.

VT 1012. MIDLAND RAILWAY TAPPER BLOCK BELL DATED 1892.

A very early example of this companies block bells, stamped M.R.Co in 2 places and 1892 on the rear of the case making it 108 years old ! The coils have been resistance tested and match the original test label. 

Original and complete with a lovely patina.

VT 1757 - BR WR SIGNALBOX TRAIN REGISTER - AVONMOUTH DOCK

This Western region signal box train register is full and complete and in great readable condition.

It is from Avonmouth dock junction from January 1983 - June 1983

VT 1751 - GWR BRASS SHELF PLATE - NEWBURY EAST

This is a beautiful bras shelf plate from under a signal box block bell.  All the wax has been retained and wording is clear to see.

A must for any signalling collector. This example in excellent ex box condition with service wear. The Enamel is in ex railway condition.

VT 1763 - DRIVERS GRIMSBY LODGE BOX

Some used to refer to this as the " Double home" box

This is a beautiful lodge box, labelled to a J.W MOORE.

Complete with solid handle. With original logo of makers J H DOBSON

VT1665. LMS POWER INDICATOR FOR COLOUR LIGHT SIGNAL NO 20/21

A combined power on/off and bell indicator. This example was to for the power supply on a colour light signal. If the power failed the bell would ring and show if the standby power was now in use.  All coils tested  on ohms meter and all working.

A fine complex instrument at a modest price.

VT 1774 - BR NER CAST IRON LEVER PLATE

This distant lever is a rare survivor of the mid 20's railway with its original green paint, which was later changed to yellow on the NER. 

As you can see it has raised letering, all in good ex box condition

A fantastic example of the Midland Railway Rotary "lock and Block" indicator. Stamped MR co and LMS and dated 1913,  this instrument this is a is complete with a linemans key . The condition and patina is superb!

VT 1745 - LNER RAILWAY POLICEMAN'S WHISTLE METROPOLITAN

This is a beautiful and loud example of a LNER policeman's brass whistle. Circa 1900's, by J Hudson & co

This whistle features the LNER fish eye emblem, and is in great condition.

VT 1744 - BR POLICEMAN'S WHISTLE - 176

This is a loud & beautiful example of a British Railway Policeman's brass whistle. 

It is labelled with Citadel 176 as can be sen in the photographs

VT 1406 GWR DOUBLE SPAGNOLETTI BLOCK INSTRUMENT

This GWR double line block instrument is offered with straight moulding being the later pattern. The front slide mountings are correct being the cast 'all in one' variety with flags and coils tested at 90 ohms. A very nice collectors piece or use again in a heritage signal box or museum display.

VT 1761 - BR WR SIGNALBOX TRAIN REGISTER AVONMOUTH TOWN

This full and complete Western region signal box train register is in great readable condition.

It is dated from August 1984 - November 1984

It seems with this one the signalmen had a sense of humour - take a closer look at the front cover!

VT 1750 - BR WR SIGNAL BOX TRAIN REGISTER ATHELNEY

This West of England main line train register is full and completed.

It dates from January - March 1980, and is in good condition

VT1729. GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY TAPPER BLOCK BELL.

A very nice split cased G C Rly tapper block bell retaining its original label "WEIGH OFFICE". The coils have been tested at 30 ohms.

Case work in great condition and lovely patina.

VT1656. SINGLE LINE KEY "POOL QUAY-LLANYMYNECH

Llanymynech railway station was an important junction station on the Cambrian Railways mainline from Welshpool, Powys to Oswestry, Shropshire, serving the village of Llanymynech. Pool Quay was on the Oswestry side.

An original key token with its original early pattern large font engraving. 

AIRLINE CAP BADGE = EAGLE AIRWAYS. GD805.

Eagle Airways uniform cap badge. Rare genuine used for purpose badge of this short lived airline. This airline also had a brief business partnership with Cunard.

GWR BRASS SIGNAL BOX PLUNGER. STOCK CODE PR 0046

A nice GWR brass plunger. These plungers were really electric switches which were mounted on the face of the block shelf usually above the lever it applied to.

The signalman would depress the button which in turn energized an electric lever lock, providing the interlocking was correct the lock would lift and allow the lever to be pulled.

This item is in good condition and has an Ivorine plate attached.

PS1912191. GWR 20 LEVER SIGNAL BOX LEVER FRAME.

The picture is the  other half of the frame built up. This frame is dismantled and has been shot blasted and primed ready for assembly. There is locking materials for GWR 5 bar VT including locking trays, cam boxes, drive plates and adjusters and much much more. This frame when working was converted from double twist to 5 var VT on 5 1/4"  centers. If you would like any more information please contact us. PS1912192. 20 LEVER SAXBY AND FARMER SIGNAL LEVER FRAME.

This is a very early example and originally was fitted with the companies rocker type interlocking. The frame was later converted to direct tappet locking. The frame is complete and is still bolted to part of its original wooden truss, The huge casting for the gate wheel is still bolted to the frame. A great oppertuinity to build your own signalbox. VT 1718 - GWR GENERAL APPENDIX TO THE RULE BOOK

This handbook is the general appendix to the rule book, to come into operation on August 1st, 1936.

The book is in near mint condition inside, with great photography and imaging.

This book is Volume 1, part 1

The book was written in 1927, and has a foreward by Viscount Churchill at the front of the book.

 

PR177196. GWR TURNED STEM "COW" BLOCK BELL.

Lovely old pattern bell with nice patina, working condition. Retaining lots of its original fitting including brass bobbin line relay coils and brass flat head side screws. A rare find!

VT0276. GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY BLOCK BELL.

A GWR brass turned bell stemmed block bell. beautifully cut dovetail joints and French polished surface excellent.

This item is intact and has been tested on 12 volts and works well. 

GWR SIGNAL BOX TRAIN REGISTER FROM "LITTLE MILL JUNCTION" STOCK CODE VT 0900

This is an amazing find. As an ex BR signalman I worked Little Mill in the early 1990s. This box os on the North and West line from Newport to Crewe and is approx 5 miles on the Newport side of Abergavenny box which I also worked.  This register although not in the best of condition is iver 127 years old! Many of the pages are fragile and damaged on the edges , the front cover is missing but all the entries are very readable. 

VT1216. BRITISH RAILWAYS (WR) ENAMEL BYE-LAWS SIGN.

A BR WR small enamel station booking office enamel sign. These plates were usually fixed near the ticket window regarding company bye-laws. Near mint condition with just one  tiny chip in the bottom right hand corner. Measures 6" X 4".

Portsmouth Passenger Tansport Dept cap badge. Identity number 624. Both lugs are complete on rear with fixing pin. In used for purpose condition.

VT1481. TAFF VALE RAILWAY Co SIGNAL LEVER COLLAR.

A rare Taff Vale Railway Company signal lever collar otherwise reminder appliance. This small cast iron item would be placed over the signal lever as a physical reminder to the signalman and prevents the signal lever being operated. An example would be if a train was waiting the home signal.  

Lovely condition and measures 4 1/2" diameter.

VT 0757 - GWR LAMP INDICATOR

A superb GWR lamp reapeater with an excellent flag, brass fittings and Ivorine number plate  4.29.32.33

The instrument has matching numbers 5 stamped in to the base and top cover, and is in full working order. Tested to 55 OHMS.

VT 0758 - GWR LAMP INDICATOR 47

GWR Lamp repeater, made by H White & Co. 

Complete with ivorine number plate 47. 

The instrument has knickle plated fittings, and has an excellent flag.  Complete with all internal parts, a nice example of this classic instrument.

VT 1545 - SIGNAL LEVER COLLAR

He we have a GWR early pattern signal lever collar from the earlier 5 1/4" center lever frames. These collars were still used in the boxes untill they closed. This reminder appliance is placed over the signal lever preventing it from being pulled and serving as a reminder to the signalman of an obstruction on the line or other circumstance .

VT 1279 - BR W HAND STAMPED BRUSH

British Railways Western region stamped hand brush.  Complete with thick bristles and good condition wooden handle.

VT 1409 - GWR EARLY PATTERN LAMP INDICATOR

This early pattern lamp indicator is complete wtih a good condition flag, but missing bell on bell off front plates.  This can be seen in the photographs. 

In good condition, casing in excellent condition, and complete with its original curved moulding.  A nice instrument.

This item is in good condition, though there is a pencil mark on the front cover. Removing this would still leave a mark due to the cover material so has been left.

VT 1465 - GWR BRASS LEVER LEAD 49

An original GWR brass lever lead '49' as used on a disconnected lever. The lever in this case would be painted white and this single 'button' lever plate fitted into position as to continue the lever number sequence within the signal box. A nice touch to your signal box .

VT 1531 - BR LMR SECTIONAL APPENDIX TO WORKING TIMETABLE.

This sectional appendix to working timetable and books of rules and regulations is for the Midland Lines.  1st October 1960 - From the Barrow Hill South Box

VT1516. THERMOSTATIC CONTROL Co SHEEP DOME BLOCK BELL.

Here we have a more rare example of a block bell manufactured by The Thermostatic Control Company who were owned by R.E.Thompson. This item is in good condition but  sadly is missing its makers label. Bell coils tested at 5 ohms each and line coils tested at 25 ohms each.

This instrument is complete and in full working order. Although the makers plate is missing a photo of the plate that would have been fitted

BRITISH RAILWAYS WESTERN REGION SIGNAL BOX DOOR KEY

A  standard British Railways Western Region signal box door key, exactly the same as a GWR key in size and configuration.

 A choice of 2 keys are avaible and both BR W.

Made from steel and plated, some of the plating has worn away.

GWR WORKMAN DISCONNECTED BADGE. STOCK CODE PR 18610A

A very important piece of equipment, an enamel faced signalmans reminder appliance  "WORKMAN DISCONNECTED" which the signalman would place on a lever when S and T department were working on a equipment affected by the work. It would be an agreement with the Signal engineer and the signalman what would be affected and this device would be placed over the lever handle and an entry made in the train register and signed by both parties. A must for any signalling collector. This example in excellent ex box condition with service wear.  The Enamel is in ex railway condition.

BACHMANN CLASS 70 DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE. GD761.

Bachmann 00 gauge Class 70 Diesel locomotive 70003 in Freightliner livery. 31-586 first production.  As new (never used) and boxed.

VT1470. LARGE BRASS/ GUN METAL "PENBERTHY" LOCOMOTIVE OR TRACTION ENGINE WHISTLE AND VALVE.

A handsome large "Penberthy" locomotive whistle and combined operation valve. Thread 3/4"BSP female thread and measures 12" tall and 2 1/2" chamber.

Excellent useable condition. A repair has been carried out somewhere in its life but carried out well.

PR6193 GWR IVORINE INSTRUMENT No PLATE 1

Used by the GWR before WW2 these ivorine examples were used to replace the earlier examples made from brass mainly on repeaters. No 1 was very often a Distant Signal. Hard to get when you want one.

PR6192 GWR IVORINE INSTRUMENT No PLATE 2

Made from an early ivorine material, these later pre war instrument plates were made by the GWR and used to replace the brass examples or when an instrument was either renewed or alterted in any way. Not often seen for sale but an essential item for your repeater.

VT 1314 - GWR TYRES PERMISSIVE BLOCK INSTRUMENT

This excellent original condition GWR permissive block instrument has a superb mahogany case, and wonderful patina.

Complete with lock and key, it has an excellent condition flag, and is in working order, and can signal up to five trains within a goods line.

VT1051. GWR DOUBLE SPAGNOLETTI BLOCK INDICATOR.

This is an early pattern "Spag" which has been modified at the signal works to include  additional rear contacts for locking with line clear etc. Lovely traffolite plate" FROM DOLCOATH SDG.

In full working order and all coils tested at 90 ohms each.
