Joe has been collecting Railwayana for nearly 40 years specialising in signalling related items. He spent 7 years as a Signalman with British Railways working traditional manual lever signal boxes before moving on to modern power boxes.

As a fully qualified engineer and a specialist in building and restoring all steam related railwayana and engines Joe is extremely passionate and always ensures top quality advice and restoration work on all our products.

PR1710191. S & T GALVO METER FOR SPARES OR REPAIR.

Manufactured by Elliot  BROS, lONDON this instrument is in a sad state but one of you electrical experts may be able to do something with it. Not tested and sold as seen......Made from hardwood and brass.

For spares or repair. Width at base  5 1/2" X height 7" depth 2 1/4"

DT1710191. GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY CAST IRON 1884 BOUNDRY MARKER.

Here we have an 1884 cast iron boundry marker cast to a piece of broad gauge Barlow bridge  rail. Originally it would have been around 6 feet long but its been gas tourched at about a foot, just long enough to display!

A heavy piece of railway iron work and a great garden feature painted up.. 

VT1288. SIGNAL DEPARTMENT LAMP OIL POURER BY BRAIMER.

In good ex railway service condition with a small crack on the soldering near where the spout joins the cannister. This does not detract in any way and easilr repairable.

BR SOUTHERN REGION SENIOR STAFF CAP BADGE. GD765.

British Railways Southern Region Senior Staff Cap Badge. Padded green felt background. Earlier type with bullion wire oak leaf wreath. In used for purpose condition.

VT1340. LNWR "DOG KENNEL" NON-TAPPER BLOCK BELL.

This LNWR non-tapper version could have been used as an ETS (electric token system) block bell. Coils tested at 50 ohms.

This instrument is in ex signalbox condition.

VT1265. BR M ENAMEL TOTEM "LOSTOCK JUNCTION"

Lostock Gralam railway station serves the village of Lostock Gralam in Cheshire, England. The station is on the Mid-Cheshire Line from Chester to Manchester .... This totem is in excellent condition with great colour and shine. There are a few minor chip touchins well excuted. 

Fully flat flanged example with face fixing holes.

VT1241. GWR SIGNAL BOX SIGNAL WIRE ADJUSTER.

This piece of apparatus stands behind the controlling signal lever and allows the signalman to adjust the signal wire going to the signal is hot or cold weather due to expansion and contraction. This item is in un-restored ex signal box condition and is in working order. 

This item stand around 36".

VT1361. BR M ENAMEL TOTEM "EDGE HILL" TYPE F D 4.

Edge Hill Station is the oldest passenger railway station in the World. Some say when Stephenson's Rocket left Edge Hill for Manchester on the 15th September 1830 it marked the beginning of the modern world. This totem is in 100% ex railway un-restored condition. A good colour and shine considering the location and heavy industry nearby. The totem has its original rear fixing bracket which is included in the sale.

A un-restored totem with great patina. This is a type F D 4 example with the 4 face fixing holes and fully flanged.

VT1266. G.N.Rly. SINGLE NEEDLE BLOCK TELEGRAPH INSTRUMENT

This beautifully constructed instrument was how the railways comuncated before telephones. This example is from a section on the Great Northern Railways East Coast Mail line from Kings Cross and the index card has some fantastic place names and is in excellent condition. 

This instrument is in excellent condition. The coils have been tested in our workshops and test label fitted.

GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY SIGNAL BOX FOOT PLUNGER

A sturdy Great Northern Railway floor mounted signal foot plunger.

This device would be mounted near the sweeps of the lever frame in front of the lever which it locked.

When the signalman need to operate the lever he would put his foot on and depress the brass button. this would operate the electro-mechanicial lock on the downstairs on the lever frame.

This example is in fantastic condition and has many more years life left in it.

VT1235. BR WR 42 OHM ELECTRIC LEVER LOCK.

 

We have 10 of these in stock currently. This example has be tested and is in full working order. The coil measured a resistance of 45 ohms although the coils is marked 42 ohms. Comes complete with metal cover. 

In full working ex railway service condition.

VT1268. GWR TYERS PERMISSIVE SENDING BLOCK INDICATOR

A fine example of these large handsome instruments. These were used on goods lines and allowed up to 6 trains to enter the section . The commutator handle is turned to show numbers to 6. In excellent condition.

This instrument has been tested in our workshops and has electricial test label applied.

DJN 229191. PART BUILT "JUPITER" 4-4-0 LOCOMOTIVE,

This well made locomotive is the result of over 15 years by a  model engineer . It was designed as a 10 1/4" gauge model but ended up at 10 " gauge. We have since fully re-gauged the tender and brake system to the original gauge. The loco driving axles will either need remaking or the wheels pushing out 1/8" either side and bogie axles remaking. The chassis runs very well on air and apart from a boiler many  items towards to project are included.

GWR DOUBLE SPAGNOLETTI INSTRUMENT. STOCK CODE VT XXXX

A nice example of a classic GWR Spagnoletti block indicator.

This one has had the modification carried out at Reading signal works where the extra contacts have been added on the rear. This allowed for more electricial interlocking to make the railways safer.

This instrument is in full working order .

VT1087. BR M SIGNAL/GROUND SIGNAL CONTACTS BOX.

This device is bolted at the top of the signal mast and the drive arm connected to the signal blade drive arm. Its purpose is the prove the position of the arm and is electrically connected to an indicator in the signalbox. This item has been serviced and is ready for use.

GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY NON-PEGGING BLOCK. STOCK CODE VT 0352

He we have this very nice Great Central Railway non-pegging block indicator.

This one is rather unusual in that it still has parts in situ from when it was a pigging block.

The works have removed the handle and spindle and covered the hole left with a nice polished brass plate.

The instrument is in clean original un-restored condition and is in electricial working order.

VT1250. CROSSING NO GATES ROAD SIGN.

A lovery ex roadside condition "CROSSING NO GATES" sign manufactured by NEEDHAM, STOCKPORT. The sign is cast alloy and is in un-restored condition and 100% genuine.

VT1258. BR S ENAMEL WAITING AND LADIES ROOM SIGN.

Great condition.

This enamel is in near mint condition apart from one small damaged area on the top left hand end. The colour and shine is exceptional and evidence of it being part of a double sided version on the edge.

R.E.THOMPSON DISTANT SIGNAL REPEATER. STOCK CODE VT 0464

This distant signal bacolite repeater is in excellent condition and has been electrically tested on 6 volts and works very well, It would actually operate on 3 volts !

Tested to 175 OHMS

VT1257. BR LNER PATTERN LOCOMOTIVE HEADLAMP.

The condition is ex loco although the is 2 small cracks in the inner red lens. We can supply a red glass at extra cost, please enquire.

K.E.P.V. PLATE FROM PRUSSIAN RAILWAYS STEAM LOCOMOTIVE. STOCK CODE TP 45197

A rare survivor is this Bronze plate dating from  between 1890 and 1910,  K.E.P.V.  which is the "Kaiserlich Preussie Eisenbahn Verwaltung" or " Imperial  Prussian Railways Management". This being Nickle plated is the much rarer version and most probably taken as booty by British soldiers in worls war 1. weel over 100 years old. This is the genunine article and measures   245 MMs and  is mounted on a nice polished Oak  base. 

BOROUGH OF SWINDON BUTTONS. GD741.

Borough of Swindon brass buttons. x12 large and x6 small. All shanks complete on rear. Maker = Compton & Sons. In used for purpose condition.

ENAMEL BUS STOP SIGN. STOCK CODE PR 164196

A nice old Bournemouth Corporation Transport enamel bus sign. Several large chips which could be repaired or display as is. Measures  16 3/4" X 10 3/4".

PR199192 Bedminster Totem

Bedminster railway station is on the Bristol to Exeter Line and serves the districts of Bedminster and Windmill Hill in Bristol, south-west England. It is 0.9 miles (1.4 km) to the west of Bristol Temple Meads, and 119 miles (192 km) from London Paddington. Its three letter station code is BMT. It was opened in 1871 by the Bristol and Exeter Railway, was resited slightly further to the west in 1884 and was rebuilt in 1932. This totem is fully flanged and has a good colour and some loss of shine. Two repairs have been carried out on the top right hand end of the panel.

PR 169191 GWR " 2 ASPECT "STEEL TOP WW 1 ISSUE HANDLAMP"

This format of lamp is the larger pre-grouping hand lamp usually fitted with a copper dome, hence the nickname "copper top". During world war 1 copper and brass were need for munitions so companies like the GWR  had to find ways of using other materials.  This lamp was fitted with a steel top making it much rarer than the copper top versions. The lamp still has its GWR etched glass intact.  This lamp was made at Swindon works and is stamped   GWR SWINDON.

This lamp is in fully original ex railway service condition.

SIGNAL BOX TELEPHONE. STOCK CODE PR 110701

This telephone has interesting description plates as wording suggests it is for tail lamp information.

When freight trains entered the yard and signalmen were unable to to see the rear of the train for tail lamp information, there would be telephone such as this one which the train crew could use to call the signalmen.

The handset has one small chip

AN EARLY HAND CUT SHELF PLATE FROM " TRAVELLERS REST" SIGNAL BOX, FROM THE OLD SEVERN & WYE VALLEY RAILWAY

This plate is in excellent condition

SMOKEBOX NUMBER PLATE FROM BLACK FIVE No 45385 . STOCK CODE TP 185192

This locomotive entered service on 31st May 1949 and was at several sheds including  Warrington  Dallam 8B  and Springs branch ,Wigan. She was  withdrawn   11th March 1968 and scrapped at Great Bridge by Cashmores. The plate is in excellent un-damaged condition.

SMOKEBOX NUMBER PLATE 7444. STOCK CODE VT 0741

Ex GWR Collett panyard tank locomotive, entered service 28/2/1950. Withdrawn July 1964 and susequently scrapped December 1964.

This plate is in ex loco conition with no welds or repairs.

GWR SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE 5566 EX COLLETT 2-6-2T. STOCK CODE TP 183192

A cast iron smokebox number plate  from a swindon built tank locomotive,.Entered service January 1929 after 30 years service was withdrawn  January 1959 and scrapped in August of that year.  Sheds include 82A Bristol Bath Road and  89C Machynlleth.

A crease repair to the right hand side, and chipping in the lower panel, all restored. Reasonable job and good colour match.

Monarch Airlines cap badge. Cloth and wire. This badge has seen service and is in used for purpose condition. Now defunct airline.

CAST IRON BRAKE VAN STOVE . STOCK CODE VT 1059

This stove is in exceptional condition with and heat fractures, heat damage or wasting. It's been cleaned and painted with heat resistant paint and comes complete with a grate.

This lovely old Tilley Doughnut lamp  in in fantastic condition and is one of a pair we have for sale which came from EDENBRIDGE SIGNAL BOX. The lamp is complete except for a mantle which is availble from ebay. These lamps are scare to find in this condition .

GWR TYERS BRASS CASED SIGNAL ARM REPEATER. STOCK CODE VT 0034

Nice little GWR Tyers signal arm repeater mounted in a nice heavry brass case.  These instruments were mounted on the block shelf above the lever frame and indicated to the signalman the position of the signal arm. This instrument is in full working order.

W R SYKES S.Rly SPLIT CASE SMALL BLOCK BELL. STOCK CODE VT 0509

This Southern Railway split cased block bell was manufactured ny W.R.Sykes. 

This example in in good ex signalbox condition with usual service wear. Tested and working and complete with makers label.

GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY BLOCK BELL. STOCK CODE VT 0276

A GWR brass turned bell stemmed block bell. beautifully cut dovetail joints and French polished surface excellent.

This item is intact and has been tested on 12 volts and works well. 

GWR TURNED STEM "COW" BLOCK BELL. STOCK CODE PR177196

Lovely old pattern bell with nice patina, working condition. Retaining lots of its original fitting including brass bobbin line relay coils and brass flat head side screws. A rare find!

GWR "SPLIT CASED" BLOCK BELL FROM CHIPPENHAM EAST BOX. STOCK CODE PR 201912

To the experienced block bell collector these split cased bells are always a delight to see and this ones no exception. This bell was removed from Chippenham East signal box on closure by the signalman. This bell has all its brass fittings complete and is in full working order complete with its great sounding "flat" dome bell.;

This ex LMR cast iron ground disc is just waiting to live in your garden.

It is complete with lamp and lenses intact. This example is also fitted with a detector to show its present in the signalbox.

This is a heavy item but will easliy load into a hatchback or estate car, full assistance will be given.

GREAT NORTH OF SCOTLAND RAILWAY HANGING SIGNAL BOX LAMP "ROTHES" STOCK CODE VT0322

A very nice signal box hanging oil lamp.

This lamp has a lovely brass plate with the name of the signal box it came from "ROTHES" on the Great North of Scotland Railway.

The lamp is complete although I'm not 100% certain the "China Mans Hat" is original but that how it came and it looks ok.

The burner is complete with wickes.

VINTAGE ROAD VEHICLE OIL REAR LAMP. STOCK CODE PR0029

This oil lamp is one of a pair we're selling. Apart from some age related rust its in fantastic condition and ready to use.

It has a Crown mark on it so presumably this company manufactured for H.R.H. Queen Elizabeth.

Look great in use on a steam roller of vintage lorry.

Everything complete and just needs oil.

SEVERN TUNNEL TILLEY INSPECTION LAMP. STOCK CODE PRDN 213191

This lovely old lamp  came through the shop from an old local railwayman. These were used in the  4mile 628 yard Severn Tunnel as the usual oil  hand lamps were not as effictive in the intense darkness. This item looks in great condition and just requires a new mantle which are readily available.

Manchester Corporation Transport Cap Badge. Chrome with both lugs and fixing pin complete on rear in used for purpose condition.

This LNER cash bag is in ex railway condition and has 2 brass plates attached. The leather has been treated and is very supply and soft with no rips, tears or cracking.

Here we have an Edmondson ticket dating machine.

This machine is complete but needs stamps which I believe are available.

This machine could serve again on a preserved railway or just join your collection.

ALLOY KEY TOKEN "WELSHPOOL-MONTGOMERY" STOCK CODE PR 047

This token is in great condition and is a rare section indeed! When sold by BR the end was cut off for safety reasons but a replacement end has been proffesionally fitted and weathered. Looks great.

GWR WORKMAN DISCONNECTED BADGE. STOCK CODE PR 18610A

A very important piece of equipment, an enamel faced signalmans reminder appliance  "WORKMAN DISCONNECTED" which the signalman would place on a lever when S and T department were working on a equipment affected by the work. It would be an agreement with the Signal engineer and the signalman what would be affected and this device would be placed over the lever handle and an entry made in the train register and signed by both parties. A must for any signalling collector. This example in excellent ex box condition with service wear.  The Enamel is in ex railway condition.

MARITIME BRASS BINNACLE COMPASS. PR280719

Maritime Brass Binnacle Compass. Stands 9 inches tall. A nice weighty piece with four screw holes in it’s base for securing in position. In all original condition although the dial could do with a little restoration. Would look good as an artefact in a coastal coffee shop or wine bar.

CLASS 45 "PEAK" PISTON. STOCK CODE DN 267192

This item weighs in at 34 KG so would be better collected, we are prepared to post however will cost £33.00 with DPD.

ALLOY KEY TOKEN " INSTOW- BIDEFORD" STOCK CODE PR 43193

This token came from a section on the Barnstaple to Torrington line and is a very popular picturesque line. The token is in original ex railway condition with its original end. This is a "C" pattern configuration.

GWR STEEL KEY TOKEN "RHYDYCAR JUNCTION-ABERCANAID. STOCK CODE VT 0389

Here we have a nice early GWR steel "C" pattern single line key token from the Merthyr Tydfil -Brecon line.

This example has an engraved plate riveted to the key bearing the controlling signalboxes at each end of the single line.

This item is in excellent condition with service wear.

COPPER RAILWAY YARD GAS/OIL LAMP. STOCK CODE STA001

Possible GWR from a station or goods yard, this lamp is in great condition just requiring painting and mounting onto a suitable lamp post. The lamp can be converted to electric quite easily.

STATION LAMP TOP WITH FROG. STOCK CODE VT 631911

This lamp top is complete with the exception of the spike on the top. Its been nicely made from wood and painted. The lamp metal work is in fantastic condition and all glass comple and not broken. The side door in working order. Repainted and mounted on a post would make a great garden feature.

This is a large enamel pub sign "the railway" and measures 36" X 52 1/2". The sign is in outstanding condition and  would make a fantastic statement peice in any collection.

7 1/4" GAUGE 6100 ROYAL SCOT LIVE STEAM LOCOMOTIVE, STOCK CODE CK 001

THE OWNER OF THIS LOCOMOTIVE HAS ASKED US TO REDUCE THE PRICE .......A 7 1/4" gauge un-rebuilt Royal scot class locomotive number 6100 "ROYAL SCOT" built from Bassett Lowke castings. This model has been a regular performer at the Great  Cockrow Railway at Chertsey. He she would run all day and as here driver says "she steams like a witch" 

The loco has a copper boiler and is accompanied with previous certificates and hydraulic tests documents and is in full running order.

She will be supplied with a new boiler certificate and will be ready to use.

This porcelain insulator is in good condition though has some marks on the outisde.

A North Staffordshire Railway "detonator " canister for storing explosive audible shots.

LNWR TRAIN ON LINE INDICATOR BRASS PLATE. STOCK CODE VT 0711

Here we have a splendid piece of brasswork. Ths item would have been screwed to the block shelf and would have had an indicator arrow and handle which was operated by the signal lever when the cross over road was reversed. This happened automatically and was a safety device to indicate to the signal man the presence of a train standing on the opposite line. This decise was patented in 1916 following improvements after Britains worst rail disaster in 1915 in Quintinshill near Gretna on the former Caledonian railway.

GWR WORKMAN DISCONNECTED BADGE. STOCK CODE 1165B

A very important piece of equipment, an enamel faced signalmans reminder appliance  "WORKMAN DISCONNECTED" which the signalman would place on a lever when S and T department were working on a equipment affected by the work. It would be an agreement with the Signal engineer and the signalman what would be affected and this device would be placed over the lever handle and an entry made in the train register and signed by both parties. A must for any signalling collector. This example in excellent ex box condition with service wear.  The Enamel is near mint!!

This Grimsby box was supplied by G . Hildred, Ironmongers and Tinsmiths, Hainton Square, Grimsby.

This drivers lodge box is in ex locomotive condition and is ready to serve again!  This item  is complete with 2 plates of which one is a makers plate and the other with the drivers name, J.Jones ,Stockport.

BABCOCK & WILCOX BRASS MAKERS PLATE ON WOOD SHIELD. STOCK CODE VT 135193

This item has a very nice working patina and was made by the famous company of Babcock and Wilcox , This firm produced 1000s of boilers for iworkshops,ships and power station. The company also produced steam winches and this plate is from one of them.
