Joe has been collecting Railwayana for nearly 40 years specialising in signalling related items. He spent 7 years as a Signalman with British Railways working traditional manual lever signal boxes before moving on to modern power boxes.

As a fully qualified engineer and a specialist in building and restoring all steam related railwayana and engines Joe is extremely passionate and always ensures top quality advice and restoration work on all our products.

VT 2482. TRI-ANG RAILWAYS RT.268 BELL SIGNAL SET.

Now this is a super rare item, made by Tri-ang Railways and advertised in their 1964 catalouge is this lovely little Block indicator and combined block bell set. Ive only ever had 2 of these and the other set is in my personal collection. This set is in its original box and comes complete with all its wiring. Every signalling collector should have one of these sets in his collection. Designed to work from the 12 volt layout controller.

VT 2503. MINIATURE "SIEMENS" POWER FRAME LEVER EX NEWPORT WEST BOX.

A miniature power frame lever produce by Siemens for the G.W.R. scheme of 1929 in Newport, an East and west boxes housed the same type of frame. The West box was the larger of the 2 with 244 levers! The lever is made of bronze with cast iron frame. Measures  23 CM height. 

VT 2471. G.W.R. B.R. W.R. "THOMPSON" FLAT DOME BLOCK BELL.

Here we have a first class example of a light cased block bell made for B.R  W.R. by the well known instrument make R.E.Thompson. This bell is in excellent ex box condition and has all coils tested on an Ohms  meter. The bell has the distinctive low "pang" sound.. I really struggle to aquire these bell types!

TPMW 10820. L.N.W.R. BLOCK INSTRUMENT "MENIA BRIDGE"

This lovely old Fletchers block indicator was removed from Llanfair crossing signal box when the instruments were replaced. This instrument is in full working order and all coils tested on an Ohms meter.The instrument retains its original brass instrument plate "MENIA BRIDGE"

VT 2233. LANCASHIRE AND YORKSHIRE RAILWAY BLOCK INDICATOR.

This fine example of a L & Y Rly block indicator in in excellent condition complete with brass instrument label "ROSE HILL". Rose Hill Junction" was near Burnden Junction on the Bolton Blackburn Line Junction.

The coils have been tested on an Ohms meter.

TPMW 9820. L.N.W.R. FLETCHERS BLOCK INDICATORS "HARROW"

A fine example of a Fletchers L.N.W.R. block indicator in fine ex box condition and in tested working order. This instrument is near to the scene of a terrible rail disaster on  8 Oct 1952 in which  the Perth bound Express ploughed into a stationary train at Harrow and Wealdstone station causing heavy fatalities. A second Northbound train crashed into wreckage fouling the opposite line. This instrument has it original "HARROW" ivorine plate and comes complete with its S & T linemans  key.

VT 2457. L.N.W.R. PERMISSIVE BLOCK INDICATOR" SLOW LINES BANGOR No 2"

This impressive Fletchers permissive block indicator was removed from Bangor No 1 signal box upon closure. The instrument is in excellent ex signal box condition and comes complete with its S & T Linemans cabinet key. All coils tested on Ohms meter and are in full working order. These instruments were used on permissive block lines where more than one non passenger train could be permitted, in this case up to 8. The case work in in fine fettle and retains the original ivorine label. 

VT 2442. BR W ENAMEL TOTEM SIGN "TAUNTON"

A hall flanged totem from the popular West of England ex G.W.R. main line station. The face has 2 very small professionally  executed repairs and touching in on the outer border , the colour and shine on this totem is outstanding!

PRRP 9820. PLASTIC CAB PLATE FROM CLASS 92 92031.

Theses cabplates from class 92 electric locomotives are highly prised and not easy to come by, this example is from the No 2 cab and in in 100% ex locomotive condition.

VT 2429. BR S ENAMEL TOTEM "RAMSGATE"

Ramsgate railway station servers the town of Ramsgate in Thanet in Kent and is on the Chatham main line79 miles down the line from London Victoria.This is a fully flanged totem which has received several small well executed repairs. There are some small scratches present but this hardly shows. The totem has a great colour and shine.

VT 2467. G.W.R. 1947 PATTERN DOUBLE LINE BLOCK INDICATOR.

This fine instrument was introduced in 1947 by the G.W.R. and replaced the "Spagnoletti"  block instrument was had been in use for more than 70 years. This early pattern dark case features comb joint and rounded top corners, later instruments had square corners and simplified joints. This example is in pristine condition and in full working order having all coils tested on an Ohms meter. This instrument is also fitted with 2 sets of contacts on the communator.

VT 2455. ALLOY SINGLE LINE KEY " WHITSTONE AND BRIDGERULE- HOLSWORTHY"

 This single line section was on the Bude branch that closed in 1966. The station was opened in 1898 by the London and South Western Railway (LSWR) when the line was extended from Holsworthy to the new terminus of the line at Bude

The station had been proposed for closure in the Beeching report. The station sat inconveniently between the settlements of Bridgerule in Devon and Whitstone in Cornwall

VT 2463. G.W.R. STEEL SINGLE LINE KEY "HOLT-PATNEY AND CHIRTON"

This early G.W.R. steel single line key is from the Devises branch and covers the section HOLT-PATNEY AND CHIRTON. The section would have been Holt Junction - Patney and Chirton but when the Junction was closed the key were re-engraved to just Holt. This is an "A" pattern configuration.

PR 2279. SOUTHERN RAILWAY "PROPPING UP DOORS" ENAMEL SIGN.

 Measure  17 3/4" X 11 1/2". An ex railway condition enamel 1925 propping up doors sign.

Some chipping and loss of enamel but fantastic colour and shine. 

VT 2453B - GWR DOWN WICKET BRASS LEVER PLATE

This circular brass would have been secured to one of a pair of small levers in the signal box. These levers would lock the wicket gates an a level crossing. In excellent ex railway service condition.

VT 2428. L.N.E.R.LOCOMOTIVE WHISTLE FROM B1 4-6-0 LOCOMOTIVE.

A totally ex locomotive condition bronze whistle and valve believed to be from a Thompson B 1 locomotive. They were a group standard design and were used on other classes. This example has its actuating arm and connection , the rod being burnt off which continued of into the cab. The steam shut of valve is intact with its bronze wheel. A fine heafty peice.

VT 0738. G.W.R. BRASS OVAL DOWN WICKET PLATE.

This more rare small oval "DOWN WICKET" brass would have been secured to one of a pair of small levers in the signal box. These levers would lock the wicket gates an a level crossing. In excellent ex railway service condition.

VT 2431 - WELWYN BLOCK RELEASE INSTRUMENT

This instrument is a vital peice of signalling equipment provided in signal boxes all over Britian  following a tragic accident on  15th June 1935 where a  London Kings Cross to Leeds  collided into the rear of the Kings Cross to Leeds train leaving 14 dead and 29 injured. 

This instrument was linked to the  Line clear on the block indicator and must be operated by the signalman in the event of the Line Clear being cancelled to enable the block indicator to be cleared.. The instrument took 2 minutes to wind  and in this time the  line ahead of the home signal would be held and all points

VT 2094 - DECAUVILLE FAC-SIMILE DU CATALOGUE 130 DE 1916

This beautiful French hardback book comes complete with a clean as new dust cover.  The pages are glossy and full of images, diagrams and tables.

A British Railways YORK oval workplate.

An official publication of the LMS giving details about its engines , pictures and numbers. This person has ticked the locos he saw. 

THE SOUTH WALES DIRECT LINE BY P. RENDALL. STOCK CODE PR2912 2

This book is packed with great pictures , illustrations and information. The author is an exrailwayman from the signalling grades and has written other titles, Hes currently working on a new book about  Severn Tunnel Junction.This item is brand new. 

R.E.THOMPSON BACOLITE "SIGNAL SLOT REPEATER". STOCK VT 0281218

An  R.E.Thompson bacolite signal slot repeater, This instrument would indicate when the slot lever had worked the counter balance on a slotted stop/distant signal  worked by two signal boxes. Tested and working.

GWR BRISTOL SKITTLES LEAGUE CUP 1937-38. STOCK CODE PR607

Nice silver trophy cup for the Bristol skittles leaque runners up 1937-38. the base is made from Bacolite. Overall height about inches.

A.E.SOMMERS AND CO (SCALES) LTD. COUNTER BALANCE SCALES. STOCK CODE PR606

Here we hav a set of counterbalance scale made by A.E.Sommers and Co ltd, London. Thses scales are in full working order and come with brass weights. A fine English item from a jewellery shop.

BRITISH RAILWAYS 1950 RULE BOOK. STOCK CODE PR106

Here we have this great little publication, a 1950 rule book and included is a 1962 supplement.

Both in great condition with light service wear.

The hardback book by  Oxford Publishing Co is to their usual high quality standard. The author has assembled hundreds of photos of wagons and loads. A great reference to railway modellers.

GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY APPENDIX TO THE RULE BOOK. STOCK CODE PR 106

This is a 1936 GWR appendix to the rule book, packed with everything you need to know about working trains and railway working. This example is in fantastic condition with light service wear.

BR WR SIGNAL BOX DIAGRAM "PEMBREY" STOCK CODE VT 0355

Here we have the last diagram from Pembrey signal box on the line from Swansea heading west. The diagram has had many alterations over the years as the layout was rationalized. The diagram is in good condition and the colours bright.

CLASS 47776 SPEEDOMETER. STOCK CODE PR049

Heres a chance to own a piece off this famous class of Brithish diesel locomotive traction.

This is a cab speedo form 47776. Not tested.

PADDINGTON BEAR BY GABRIELLE DESIGNS..VTPR003

Nice orignal condition Gabrielle Designs paddington Bear  wearing blue overcoat, red Dunlopo size 5 wellies and a sporting light blue hat.

Label is present on back of neck and dated 1972.

No moth holes in clothing.

VINTAGE ROAD VEHICLE OIL REAR LAMP. STOCK CODE PR0029

This oil lamp is one of a pair we're selling. Apart from some age related rust its in fantastic condition and ready to use.

It has a Crown mark on it so presumably this company manufactured for H.R.H. Queen Elizabeth.

Look great in use on a steam roller of vintage lorry.

Everything complete and just needs oil.

CAST IRON FINIAL

Here we have this fine looking cast iron finial in a fantastic as removed patina.

I am not sure what this has come from but is most likely a Tram, street lighting or telegraph pole.

The base spigot will slide into a 5" nominal bore tube.

FLYING SCOTSMAN FRAMED POSTER

A striking poster of the worlds most famous steam locomotive and train proffesionally mounted in this handsome frame.

The size of the poster is approx 33 inches by 24 inches not including the frame.

The colours are strong and vibrant and this would look great in any railway room or cafe/ wine bar.

BRITISH RAILWAYS WESTERN REGION SIGNAL BOX DOOR KEY

A  standard British Railways Western Region signal box door key, exactly the same as a GWR key in size and configuration.

 A choice of 2 keys are avaible and both BR W.

Made from steel and plated, some of the plating has worn away.

GABRIELLE ORIGINAL 1970s PADDINGTON BEAR PR001

A nice original 1970s Gabrielle Designs made Paddington Bear.  

Everything on this bear is authentic right down to the Dunlop boots!

The overcoat has a few holes here and there but nothing to detract from this cuddly Bear.

Early mahogany Double pole switch-Signal box etc

Early mahogany base double pole switch from a telephone system,

This beautifully made instrument is from around the 1930s complete with brass fittings and would have been used for switching telephone circuits in a signal box or similar.

Complete with Ivorine labels.

Approx 6" x 4 3/4"

Lovely patina.

GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY SIGNAL BOX FOOT PLUNGER

A sturdy Great Northern Railway floor mounted signal foot plunger.

This device would be mounted near the sweeps of the lever frame in front of the lever which it locked.

When the signalman need to operate the lever he would put his foot on and depress the brass button. this would operate the electro-mechanicial lock on the downstairs on the lever frame.

This example is in fantastic condition and has many more years life left in it.

7 1/4" GAUGE 6100 ROYAL SCOT LIVE STEAM LOCOMOTIVE, STOCK CODE CK 001

THE OWNER OF THIS LOCOMOTIVE HAS ASKED US TO REDUCE THE PRICE .......A 7 1/4" gauge un-rebuilt Royal scot class locomotive number 6100 "ROYAL SCOT" built from Bassett Lowke castings. This model has been a regular performer at the Great  Cockrow Railway at Chertsey. He she would run all day and as here driver says "she steams like a witch" 

The loco has a copper boiler and is accompanied with previous certificates and hydraulic tests documents and is in full running order.

She will be supplied with a new boiler certificate and will be ready to use. 

Viewing is recommended.

GWR BRASS SIGNAL BOX PLUNGER. STOCK CODE PR 0046

A nice GWR brass plunger. These plungers were really electric switches which were mounted on the face of the block shelf usually above the lever it applied to.

The signalman would depress the button which in turn energized an electric lever lock, providing the interlocking was correct the lock would lift and allow the lever to be pulled.

This item is in good condition and has an Ivorine plate attached.

HORNBY HST POWER AND DUMMY CAR SET "00" STOCK CODE PR 0045

Here we have the very popular HST which was introduced nearly 40 years ago. This set is a power car and dummy unit. good condition in working order.

LUKENHIEMER DISPLACEMENT STEAM CYLINDER OILER. STOCK CODE PR 045

This old Lukenhiemer steam cylinder displacement oil can be used on a number of steam engines from portables to rollers.

This item is complete except the two small cicular glass windows, probable available from boiler house supplies.

The overall height is 10" including the adaptor at the base, the diameter is 2 1/8" diameter.

LMS GENERAL APPENDIX AND WORKING TIMETABLES. STOCK CODE PR 107

London Midland and Scottish railway General appendix to the working timetables and sectional appendix. This is a western region version which covers Crewe and South thereof.

Great condition with service wear.

G.W.R. SIGNAL LEVER DESCRIPTION BRASS LABLE PLATE. STOCK PROO40

This is rare survivor from the early GWR stud and double twist frame days.

These frames had centers of 5 1/4" between each lever with a wooden label board running the length of the frame supported on short ornate cast iron pillars.

To these boards were screwed a length of brass about 6 to 8 feet in length which was beautifully hand engraved all the information about the levers function. 

Numbers of the levers were on plates affixed to the levers.

When they developed the 4" center frames it was too difficult for the signalman to see the backplates clearly so this system was abandoned

VT 2395 - BRITISH RAILWAYS FAREWELL JOURNEY POSTER

The very last train to operate on standard gauge track headed by the steam locomotive.  314 nostalgic miles, 10 3/4 happy hours!

This took place on 11th August 1968.

The poster is in great condition, it stands just over a meter tall.

TP 11720. RAILTRACK GREAT WESTERN "PILOTMAN" ARMBAND.

Although not very old this item dates back from 1994 when Railtrack was formed, This is from the Bristol production area of Railtrack Great Western and this is a scarce item! When I was a signalman working under Railtrack I never ever saw one so this will be a fantastic item of railwayana of the future as the company only lasted 4 years! The item is in mint condition.

VT 1270. NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY E.T.S BLOCK BELL.

This North eastern Railway was used as an E.T.S. bell ( Electric token system) and was connected in with single line instrument. This bell would be mounted on the shelf and was operated by the bell plunger on the token/tablet instrument.. This instrument was converted by the signal and telegraph department from a tapper block bell, this was common practice by many railway companies. This bell has had coils tested on ohms meter and all in perfect order.

VT 1312. G.W.R.1947 PATTERN BLOCK INDICATOR.

This instrument was designed by the G.W.R in 1947 to replace the earlier "Spagnoletti" block indicators. These were of a very eurgonicmic design and clear to see and easy to use. This early dark cased example is in full tested working order.

VT 2391 - OLD HILL BRASS PLATE

Heavy brass plate, would not have ben wall mounted as it has no screw holes.

VT 2317 - SR LEVER DESCRIPTION PLATES X 4

4 x traffolite description plates from the Strathbungo railway station.

The station opened on 1 December 1877,and was located close to the junction between the lines to Glasgow St Enoch via Gorbals Junction (opened the year before the station itself, in 1876) and the older route towards Glasgow Central (first opened in 1848 by the Glasgow, Barrhead and Neilston Direct Railway).

It closed to passengers permanently on 28 May 1962.

VT 2312. R.E.THOMPSON "MUSHROOM "TYPE TAPPER BLOCK BELL

A G.W.R. pattern tapper block bell manufactured by R.E.Thompson at their Hersham factory at Henley-on-Thames ,Surrey. Fully tested and in full working order and of the later light cased variety.

VT 2345. THOMPSON WHITE BAKELITE LIGHT OUT INDICATOR.

These white bakelite universal indicators were the final development of the Thompson company . This version is a colour light "Distant signal"  and this example has been tested on an ohms meter and is in perfect working order

VT 2346. THOMPSON WHITE BAKELITE STOP SIGNAL INDICATOR.

These white bakelite universal indicators were the final development of the Thompson company . This version is a "Stop signal"  and this example has been tested on an ohms meter and is in perfect working order

VT 2348. THOMPSON WHITE BAKELITE NORMAL/STANDBY WORKING INDICATOR.

These white bakelite universal indicators were the final development of the Thompson company . This version is a "Norman /Standby"  and this example has been tested on an ohms meter and is in perfect working order

VT 2311. R.E.THOMPSON "MUSHROOM" TYPE BLOCK BELL.

A fine example of the G.W.R. pattern block bell manufactured by R.E.Thompson at their Hersham factory at Walton-on-thames,Surrey. The instrument is in first class order and alkl coils tested on ohms meter. 

VT 2347. THOMPSON WHITE BAKELITE BARRIERS FAILED POWERNDICATOR.

These white bakelite universal indicators were the final development of the Thompson company . This version "barriers failed" are not too common and this example has been tested on an ohms meter and is in perfect working order..

PR 01720. L.N.W.Rly. CAST IRON SIGNAL BOX FIRE SURROUND.

A very nice small cast iron fire surround with LNWR cast in. A very nice item which can be reused again in a home scheme. This item is in undamaged condition.

VT 2342 - CENTRAL LONDON RAILWAY AIR PRESSURE GAUGE

This Central London Railway air pressure gauge is by the Smith Brothers & Co Ltd of Nottingham

It is in lovely untouched condition with brass face.

VT 2339 - L.E.R AIR PRESSURE GAUGE

This G.D. Peters air pressure gauge is from the London Eletrci Railway

It is untouched but in good condition with brass face

VT 2341 - L.E.R.Y AIR PRESSURE GAUGE

This L.E.R.Y air pressure gauge is from G.D.PETERS & Co Ltd, London SW1.

It is in good untouched condition, with brass face.

VT 2340 - LONDON TRANSPORT AIR PRESSURE GAUGE

This Westinghouse Brake & Signal Co Ltd pressure gauge is from a London Electric train.

It measures pounds pressure per square inch.  It has a lovely brass finish, and the underneath has the original gren paint as can be seen in the photos.

It also includes the item number 558274

VT 2274. McKENSIE & HOLLAND G.N.Rly SMALL FINIAL.

This attractive McKensie & Holland finial was produced for the Great Northern Railways somersault signals. The GNR had three sizes and this was the smallest and  is complete and restored It has its zinc spike and not some whittled down peice of wood which many ended up with. This finial is pictured next to its larger brother. These smaller versions are scarce!

VT 2280. BR WR PLATFORM SACK TRUCK. EX DAVENPORT.

Her we have a totally ex railway Engineers department sack truck from Davenport (Albert road) sign written down one side. The truck is in usable condition with no wood worm . A great display item.

This is a heavy buly item so collection preferred. We can deliver to any railwayana event we attend but only when permitted.

Parson Street station is the second station going south after leaving Bristol Temple Meads, this was a large station with 4 platforms and a large signal box where trains could diverge on to the Portishead branch. This fully flanged totem is in very nice condition with good colour and shine.

VT2287.GWR PATTERN WR ANNETTS KEY RELEASE INSTRUMENT WITH KEY.

Radley is on the Cherwell Valley Line betwee Didcot and Banbury. This instrument and ground frame was most probably installed in the late 1960s when the signal boxes were being closed. This instrument is complete with its key. This key release instrument was used in connection with a ground frame ( lever frame at ground level fro operating points and signals) in this case a siding. This instrument is in lovely ex railway condition complete with key "RADLEY" The coils have been tested with an Ohms meter and are in excellent working condition.

VT2285. GREAT EASTERN RAILWAY "FLAP BLOCK" INDICATOR.

This superb instrument is the earlier ceramic plunger type and still retains its original GER painted dial. Most are found repainted with interchangeable up/down plates fitted. This instrument has the location ST IVES scratched into the top section of the cover and was originally removed from 'Somersham' near March before being removed then presumably relocated on the GER main line before being replaced with 3 position instruments or redundant.It has a wonderful original patina with matching numbers both to the base and top cover with a brass GER location plate 'ARDLEIGH' fitted.

VT0403. LONDON AND SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY BLOCK BELL.

This blocl bell has a great sounding Gong wire. the overall condiion is excellent but sadly the internal lock is missing. otherwise in full working order. Coils tested on Ohms meter and perfect condition.

VT1893. L.M.S. STANNIER BLACK FIVE EX 45471 HOOTER WHISTLE.

An ex locomotive condition Stannier Hooter whistle from 45471. This locomotive entered  service in December 1938 and was sadly scrapped  in October 1965 when the whistle removed .  

A nice large whistle with is totally ex loco condition and evens smells of locomotive!

VT1845. GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY L.N.E.R. PIECRUST HANDLAMP.

This hand lamp is a marriage of an earlier G.N.R top stamped G.N.R and dated 1907 and an L.N.E.R case. Lamps were often repaired like this if damaged . The lamp top revolves easily and fit correct. The front slide out burner is stamped LNER .

This beautiful image is of the 2573 Harvester locomotive, published by The Railway Magazine.

2 FOOT GAUGE "DINOWIC" PETROL MECHANICAL LISTER TYPE LOCOMOTIVE

This locomotive was designed by Dan Nemeth of Joe Nemeth Engineering Ltd over a number of years. Its a robust design using a 1939 vintage re-conditioned Lister G2 petrol engine with mechanicial cone clutch transmitting its chain cdrive to both axles via a Hudson Hunslet 2 speed reversing gearbox. Being of a new construnction every this is in tip top condition with no worn out parts! Its travelled to several 2 foot line in Britian including Statfold Barn railway and Amberley chalk pits museum.

VT1664. LMS POWER INDICATOR FOR COLOUR LIGHT SIGNAL NO 23

A combined power on/off and bell indicator. This example was to for the power supply on a colour light signal. If the power failed the bell would ring and show if the standby power was now in use.  All coils tested  on ohms meter and all working.

This distant lever is a rare survivor of the mid 20's railway with its original green paint, which was later changed to yellow on the NER.

VT 1406 GWR DOUBLE SPAGNOLETTI BLOCK INSTRUMENT

This GWR double line block instrument is offered with straight moulding being the later pattern. The front slide mountings are correct being the cast 'all in one' variety with flags and coils tested at 90 ohms. A very nice collectors piece or use again in a heritage signal box or museum display.

VT 1740 - BR SIGNAL BOX TRAIN REGISTER - AVONMOUTH GOODS YARD

This full and completed British Railways signal box register is from Avonmouth goods yard, from June 1982 - March 1983.

PS1912191. GWR 20 LEVER SIGNAL BOX LEVER FRAME.

The picture is the  other half of the frame built up. This frame is dismantled and has been shot blasted and primed ready for assembly. There is locking materials for GWR 5 bar VT including locking trays, cam boxes, drive plates and adjusters and much much more. This frame when working was converted from double twist to 5 var VT on 5 1/4"  centers. If you would like any more information please contact us. PS1912192. 20 LEVER SAXBY AND FARMER SIGNAL LEVER FRAME.

This is a very early example and originally was fitted with the companies rocker type interlocking. The frame was later converted to direct tappet locking. The frame is complete and is still bolted to part of its original wooden truss, The huge casting for the gate wheel is still bolted to the frame. A great oppertuinity to build your own signalbox. GWR SIGNAL BOX TRAIN REGISTER FROM "LITTLE MILL JUNCTION" STOCK CODE VT 0900

This is an amazing find. As an ex BR signalman I worked Little Mill in the early 1990s. This box os on the North and West line from Newport to Crewe and is approx 5 miles on the Newport side of Abergavenny box which I also worked.  This register although not in the best of condition is iver 127 years old! Many of the pages are fragile and damaged on the edges , the front cover is missing but all the entries are very readable.
