Joe has been collecting Railwayana for nearly 40 years specialising in signalling related items. He spent 7 years as a Signalman with British Railways working traditional manual lever signal boxes before moving on to modern power boxes.

As a fully qualified engineer and a specialist in building and restoring all steam related railwayana and engines Joe is extremely passionate and always ensures top quality advice and restoration work on all our products.

VT 1778A - WORKMAN DISCONNECTED BADGE

A very important piece of equipment, an enamel faced signalmans reminder appliance  "WORKMAN DISCONNECTED" which the signalman would place on a lever when S and T department were working on a equipment affected by the work. It would be an agreement with the Signal engineer and the signalman what would be affected and this device would be placed over the lever handle and an entry made in the train register and signed by both parties. A must for any signalling collector. This example in excellent ex box condition with service wear.

VT 1253 - VINTAGE SHELL PETROL GLOBE

This original vintage petrol globe is in good condition, though as you can see from the pictures the flange on the neck is chipped on one side only

VT 1774 - BR NER CAST IRON LEVER PLATE

This distant lever is a rare survivor of the mid 20's railway with its original green paint, which was later changed to yellow on the NER. 

As you can see it has raised letering, all in good ex box condition

VT1728. 1913 VINTAGE MIDLAND RAILWAY ROTARY BLOCK INDICATOR

A fantastic example of the Midland Railway Rotary "lock and Block" indicator. Stamped MR co and LMS and dated 1913,  this instrument this is a is complete with a linemans key . The condition and patina is superb!

VT 1744 - BR POLICEMAN'S WHISTLE - 176

This is a loud & beautiful example of a British Railway Policeman's brass whistle.

VT 1745 - LNER RAILWAY POLICEMAN'S WHISTLE METROPOLITAN

This is a beautiful and loud example of a LNER policeman's brass whistle. Circa 1900's, by J Hudson & co

This whistle features the LNER fish eye emblem, and is in great condition.

VT 1746 - BR RAILWAY POLICEMAN'S WHISTLE

This is a beautiful and loud example of a circa 1900's railway policeman's whistle.

The whislte is in lovely condition and includes the GWR 161 stamp

VT 1406 GWR DOUBLE SPAGNOLETTI BLOCK INSTRUMENT

This GWR double line block instrument is offered with straight moulding being the later pattern. The front slide mountings are correct being the cast 'all in one' variety with flags and coils tested at 90 ohms. A very nice collectors piece or use again in a heritage signal box or museum display.

A nice clean full working order hand held key token hoop carrier. Ready to display your favourite single line key.

VT1729. GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY TAPPER BLOCK BELL.

A very nice split cased G C Rly tapper block bell retaining its original label "WEIGH OFFICE". The coils have been tested at 30 ohms.

Case work in great condition and lovely patina.

VT1656. SINGLE LINE KEY "POOL QUAY-LLANYMYNECH

Llanymynech railway station was an important junction station on the Cambrian Railways mainline from Welshpool, Powys to Oswestry, Shropshire, serving the village of Llanymynech. Pool Quay was on the Oswestry side.

An original key token with its original early pattern large font engraving. 

VT1671. MIDLAND RAILWAY 1909 BLOCK CLOSING SWITCH.

These instruments were provided where a signal box could close out of circuit when traffic was not too heavy.

When operated all communications passed between the signal boxes either side.

Stamped M R co and LMS in several places, dated 1909 and complete with key.

A first class example and comes with key.

VT1707. S & M Junc SIGNALBOX NAMEPLATE "BYFIELD"

Only a small number of items from the much loved line ever come up for sale and usually through auction. Well heres a real chance to own this box board from this delightful little station. The wood has had a small repair but is otherwise in sound condition. The letters are cast iron and have NOT been removed for any reason. This board was originally in the J Jennings collection and was bought from his widow buy the last owner.

AIRLINE CAP BADGE = EAGLE AIRWAYS. GD805.

Eagle Airways uniform cap badge. Rare genuine used for purpose badge of this short lived airline. This airline also had a brief business partnership with Cunard.

GWR BRASS SIGNAL BOX PLUNGER. STOCK CODE PR 0046

A nice GWR brass plunger. These plungers were really electric switches which were mounted on the face of the block shelf usually above the lever it applied to.

The signalman would depress the button which in turn energized an electric lever lock, providing the interlocking was correct the lock would lift and allow the lever to be pulled.

This item is in good condition and has an Ivorine plate attached.

OFFICIAL GWR 1943 SIGNALLING NOTICE CASTLE CARY. GD804.

Official GWR signalling notice S1987 for provision of new up and down Goods Loops at Castle Cary in Somerset at the junction to the Weymouth line. Work to be carried out between 21st and 28th March 1943. This small notice has a fold out plan of the new layout. Nice wartime notice of historical signalling interest.

OFFICIAL 1940 GWR SIGNALLING NOTICE = HUNTSPILL. GD803.

GWR Signalling notice S1825 introduction of new signal box and layout at HUNTSPILL in Somerset on the West of England Main Line. Provision of wartime signal box stamped Chief Engineer Office GWR Aldermaston 11th May 1940 and brought into use 19th May 1940. This small notice is a little delicate around the edges but a nice wartime official document 80 years old.

PS1912191. GWR 20 LEVER SIGNAL BOX LEVER FRAME.

The picture is the  other half of the frame built up. This frame is dismantled and has been shot blasted and primed ready for assembly. There is locking materials for GWR 5 bar VT including locking trays, cam boxes, drive plates and adjusters and much much more. This frame when working was converted from double twist to 5 var VT on 5 1/4"  centers. If you would like any more information please contact us. Several thousand pounds has been spent on new parts made to original drawings.

PS1912192. 20 LEVER SAXBY AND FARMER SIGNAL LEVER FRAME.

This is a very early example and originally was fitted with the companies rocker type interlocking. The frame was later converted to direct tappet locking. The frame is complete and is still bolted to part of its original wooden truss, The huge casting for the gate wheel is still bolted to the frame. A great oppertuinity to build your own signalbox. TRANSPORT IS CHARGED EXTRA AT COST, PLEASE ENQUIRE.

VT 1723 - A HISTORY OF THE GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY

This book is Volume 1, part 1

1833 - 1863

The book was written in 1927, and has a foreward by Viscount Churchill at the front of the book.

This small photograph album has 10 pages so can hold 20 photographs.

This Beautiful book has a glossy cover which is slightly damaged as can be seen.

The author is Dr Walter Strauss

A survey of passenger carrying miniature railways with an appendix and manned model ships.

It contains 362 illustrations and 44 tables.

VT 1718 - GWR GENERAL APPENDIX TO THE RULE BOOK

This handbook is the general appendix to the rule book, to come into operation on August 1st, 1936.

The book is in near mint condition inside, with great photography and imaging.

Slight damage to the cover.

PR177196. GWR TURNED STEM "COW" BLOCK BELL.

Lovely old pattern bell with nice patina, working condition. Retaining lots of its original fitting including brass bobbin line relay coils and brass flat head side screws. A rare find!

VT0276. GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY BLOCK BELL.

A GWR brass turned bell stemmed block bell. beautifully cut dovetail joints and French polished surface excellent.

This item is intact and has been tested on 12 volts and works well. 

VT0264. GWR R.E.THOMPSON SHEEP DOME BLOCK BELL.

A fine GWR pattern block bell manufactured by R.E.Thompson.

This bell has received a clean and test in our workshop and is now ready for use.

GWR SIGNAL BOX TRAIN REGISTER FROM "LITTLE MILL JUNCTION" STOCK CODE VT 0900

This is an amazing find. As an ex BR signalman I worked Little Mill in the early 1990s. This box os on the North and West line from Newport to Crewe and is approx 5 miles on the Newport side of Abergavenny box which I also worked.  This register although not in the best of condition is iver 127 years old! Many of the pages are fragile and damaged on the edges , the front cover is missing but all the entries are very readable.

These charts were usually hung on a nail in on the rear wall of the box where to signalman could see it easily. This is printed and bonded to thik board. Dated Oct 1967.

VT1691. BR S ENAMEL TOTEM "CHESTERFIELD AND SWALECLIFFE HALT"

This fully flanged  totem is in fantastic condition with just 2 small repairs on the lower left hand edge on the white and a little area on the green. The main green panel has some minor scratches but the colour and shine is good. A very displayable totem indeed.

VT1682 ALLOY SINGLE LINE KEY "ROCHE-TREGOSS

This single line key is in good condition and like all of the keys in this section the local Signal lineman cut the key end off to prevent un-authorized use any way else! A new end has been produced to origional drawings in our workshops and is almost un-noticeable.

VT1540. GWR CAST IRON LOCOMOTIVE CAB WARNING NOTICE.

A totally ex locomotive condition cab warning cast iron notice. These plates were usually bolted on the left hand side of the lower part of the cab roof.  Measures 12" X 7 1/2"

Excellent condition. In original un-restored condition.

VT1216. BRITISH RAILWAYS (WR) ENAMEL BYE-LAWS SIGN.

A BR WR small enamel station booking office enamel sign. These plates were usually fixed near the ticket window regarding company bye-laws. Near mint condition with just one  tiny chip in the bottom right hand corner. Measures 6" X 4".

PORTSMOUTH PASSENGER TRANSPORT CAP BADGE. GD792.

Portsmouth Passenger Tansport Dept cap badge. Identity number 624. Both lugs are complete on rear with fixing pin. In used for purpose condition.

VT1571. GWR CAST IRON "PROPPING UP DOORS" NOTICE.

This sign was fixed in goods sheds and warned of the dangerous practice of propping up wagon doors. one wonders how many wagons lost their doors when being shunted out of the shed including injuries to workman.

VT1481. TAFF VALE RAILWAY Co SIGNAL LEVER COLLAR.

A rare Taff Vale Railway Company signal lever collar otherwise reminder appliance. This small cast iron item would be placed over the signal lever as a physical reminder to the signalman and prevents the signal lever being operated. An example would be if a train was waiting the home signal.  

Lovely condition and measures 4 1/2" diameter.

VT0351. GWR .THOMPSON DARK CASED CHURCH BELL.

This is a more scarce example of an earlier Thompson manufactured block fitted the largest sheep dome bell, an absolutely fantastic long ringing tone! One of the best I heard

This bell is in full working order with the line coils tested at 25 ohms and bell coils at 5 ohms.

VT 0757 - GWR LAMP INDICATOR

A superb GWR lamp reapeater with an excellent flag, brass fittings and Ivorine number plate  4.29.32.33

The instrument has matching numbers 5 stamped in to the base and top cover, and is in full working order. Tested to 55 OHMS.

An excellent example for your home collection, or use again.  Not to be missed!

VT 0758 - GWR LAMP INDICATOR 47

GWR Lamp repeater, made by H White & Co. 

Complete with ivorine number plate 47. 

The instrument has knickle plated fittings, and has an excellent flag.  Complete with all internal parts, a nice example of this classic instrument. 

VT 1297 - CAST IRON SKIP PLATE

This cast iron skip plate is number 1326 

G.W Co Ltd Slaithwaite

This was originally fixed to large wicker type skips used in woollen mills.

VT 1279 - BR W HAND STAMPED BRUSH

British Railways Western region stamped hand brush.  Complete with thick bristles and good condition wooden handle.

VT 1545 - SIGNAL LEVER COLLAR

He we have a GWR early pattern signal lever collar from the earlier 5 1/4" center lever frames. These collars were still used in the boxes untill they closed. This reminder appliance is placed over the signal lever preventing it from being pulled and serving as a reminder to the signalman of an obstruction on the line or other circumstance .

VT 1409 - GWR EARLY PATTERN LAMP INDICATOR

This early pattern lamp indicator is complete wtih a good condition flag, but missing bell on bell off front plates.  This can be seen in the photographs. 

In good condition, casing in excellent condition, and complete with its original curved moulding.  A nice instrument.

VT1265. BR M ENAMEL TOTEM "LOSTOCK JUNCTION"

Lostock Gralam railway station serves the village of Lostock Gralam in Cheshire, England. The station is on the Mid-Cheshire Line from Chester to Manchester .... This totem is in excellent condition with great colour and shine.

There are a few minor chip touchins well executed. 

Fully flat flanged example with face fixing holes.

VT1347. GWR WOODEN SIGNAL BOX NOTICE BOARD.

Ex Signal box condition, these boards were fixed on the rear wall of the box and all notices were pinned to it. A very difficult item to find indeed!

In as removed un-restored condition.

PR2011193 - BRITISH RAILWAYS INSTRUCTIONS

For signaling trains during FOG or FALLING SNOW and arrangements in periods of frost.

To apply from 1st october 1951 until further notice

This item is in good condition, though there is a pencil mark on the front cover. Removing this would still leave a mark due to the cover material so has been left.

VT 1465 - GWR BRASS LEVER LEAD 49

An original GWR brass lever lead '49' as used on a disconnected lever. The lever in this case would be painted white and this single 'button' lever plate fitted into position as to continue the lever number sequence within the signal box. A nice touch to your signal box .

VT 1204 - BR 294 ENAMEL ARMBAND PLATE

VT1516. THERMOSTATIC CONTROL Co SHEEP DOME BLOCK BELL.

Here we have a more rare example of a block bell manufactured by The Thermostatic Control Company who were owned by R.E.Thompson. This item is in good condition but  sadly is missing its makers label. Bell coils tested at 5 ohms each and line coils tested at 25 ohms each.

This instrument is complete and in full working order. Although the makers plate is missing a photo of the plate that would have been fitted

A  standard British Railways Western Region signal box door key, exactly the same as a GWR key in size and configuration.

 A choice of 2 keys are avaible and both BR W.

Made from steel and plated, some of the plating has worn away.

BACHMANN CLASS 70 DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE. GD761.

Bachmann 00 gauge Class 70 Diesel locomotive 70003 in Freightliner livery. 31-586 first production.  As new (never used) and boxed.

BRASS STEAM LOCO DRIVERS OIL FEEDER. STOCK CODE PR 145193

This feeder is something  of high quality and beautifully polished with the owners name on a mounted copper plate, C.E.ROSSETER. This measures 27" overall. In working order.

VT1470. LARGE BRASS/ GUN METAL "PENBERTHY" LOCOMOTIVE OR TRACTION ENGINE WHISTLE AND VALVE.

A handsome large "Penberthy" locomotive whistle and combined operation valve. Thread 3/4"BSP female thread and measures 12" tall and 2 1/2" chamber.

Excellent useable condition. A repair has been carried out somewhere in its life but carried out well.

PR6193 GWR IVORINE INSTRUMENT No PLATE 1

Used by the GWR before WW2 these ivorine examples were used to replace the earlier examples made from brass mainly on repeaters. No 1 was very often a Distant Signal. Hard to get when you want one.

PR6192 GWR IVORINE INSTRUMENT No PLATE 2

Made from an early ivorine material, these later pre war instrument plates were made by the GWR and used to replace the brass examples or when an instrument was either renewed or alterted in any way. Not often seen for sale but an essential item for your repeater.

VT 1314 - GWR TYRES PERMISSIVE BLOCK INSTRUMENT

This excellent original condition GWR permissive block instrument has a superb mahogany case, and wonderful patina.

Complete with lock and key, it has an excellent condition flag, and is in working order, and can signal up to five trains within a goods line.

Complete with excellent flags and accociated parts.  Tested to 55 OHMS and in full working order. 

The lamp indicator  is the later pattern, with straight moulding, and with " bell on and bell off"  plates.   A very nice insturment in virtually original condition.

VT 1071 GWR DOUBLE SPAGNOLETTI BLOCK INSTRUMENT

Thia is an excellent example of the earlier style GWR double spagnoletti Block Instrument. It is fitted with the attractive early pattern flags and reminder flaps that were originally fitted to the single pattern block instruments. Beautiful curved moulding with a lovely patina. This is a lovely instrument with brass contacts and fittings not to be missed.

VT1405. GWR DOUBLE SPAGNOLETTI BLOCK INSTRUMENT

A supurb example with a lovely patina and fully operational for your home block shelf. These late examples have straight moulding and slightly rarer than the earlier examples seen. A lovely instrument.

British Transport Police Helmet Plate. Blackened version of this two piece obsolete plate in used for purpose condition. All fixing lugs complete on rear.

MONARCH AIRLINES CAP BADGE. GD535.

Monarch Airlines cap badge. Cloth and wire. This badge has seen service and is in used for purpose condition. Now defunct airline.

VT1051. GWR DOUBLE SPAGNOLETTI BLOCK INDICATOR.

This is an early pattern "Spag" which has been modified at the signal works to include  additional rear contacts for locking with line clear etc. Lovely traffolite plate" FROM DOLCOATH SDG.

In full working order and all coils tested at 90 ohms each.

VT1241. GWR SIGNAL BOX SIGNAL WIRE ADJUSTER.

This piece of apparatus stands behind the controlling signal lever and allows the signalman to adjust the signal wire going to the signal is hot or cold weather due to expansion and contraction. This item is in un-restored ex signal box condition and is in working order.

VT1260. LNER DOUBLE BLOCK INDICATOR.

A very nice example of the LNER block instrument and in un-restored condition. Cleaned and coils tested at 100 ohms , both needles swing freely.

VT0750. MIDLAND RAILWAY PEGGING BLOCK INDICATOR.

A beautiful classic Midland Railway Company pegging block indicator. An ouitstanding colour and patina and stamped M.R Co. in three places on the top of the case. Coils test at 100 ohms and needle swings freely.

Lovely cleaned but un-restored condition.

VT1256. GWR SINGLE SPAGNOLITTI PEGGING BLOCK INDICATOR.

A very original un-restored example of there early block indicators. This example was built by the GWR probably at Reading signal and telegraph dept and is clearly spamped G.W.R. 1250 in the wood cabinet. The coils have been tested at  80 ohms.

A stunning example of these classic instruments.

This plate is from a box on the famous route over Shap in Westmoorland on the fromer LNWR main line. This plate is en excellent Ex box condition and is ready to join your collection. It measures 5 1/2" X 3 3/4".

He we have 3 off BR WR signal plates and backing plates from TRURO WEST SIGNAL BOX.  Nice descriptions referring to ENGINE SHED and BRANCH.

GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY SIGNAL BOX FOOT PLUNGER

A sturdy Great Northern Railway floor mounted signal foot plunger.

This device would be mounted near the sweeps of the lever frame in front of the lever which it locked.

When the signalman need to operate the lever he would put his foot on and depress the brass button. this would operate the electro-mechanicial lock on the downstairs on the lever frame.

This example is in fantastic condition and has many more years life left in it.

VT1288. SIGNAL DEPARTMENT LAMP OIL POURER BY BRAIMER.

In good ex railway service condition with a small crack on the soldering near where the spout joins the cannister. This does not detract in any way and easilr repairable.

VT1266. G.N.Rly. SINGLE NEEDLE BLOCK TELEGRAPH INSTRUMENT

This beautifully constructed instrument was how the railways comuncated before telephones. This example is from a section on the Great Northern Railways East Coast Mail line from Kings Cross and the index card has some fantastic place names and is in excellent condition. 

This instrument is in excellent condition. The coils have been tested in our workshops and test label fitted.
